Description

As cyber operations accelerate from manual workflows to automated, AI-enabled, and increasingly agentic systems, the Department of the Air Force faces a new assurance challenge: machine-speed action is beginning to outpace human-speed accountability.

Traditional cyber governance models were built around human review, documented approvals, and compliance-centered authorization processes. Those models remain important, but they are no longer sufficient by themselves. In emerging cyber environments, AI systems may summarize risk, recommend action, prioritize threats, generate code, automate response, or influence operational decisions before a human fully understands the basis of the recommendation. The risk is not simply that AI may be wrong. The deeper risk is that decision authority becomes blurred.

This session explores how cyber assurance must evolve as organizations shift from compliance-centric ATOs toward data-centric, automated security across the kill web. It introduces practical concepts such as Agentic Role Mapping, Cognitive Indicators of Compromise, and decision-authority mapping to help leaders and practitioners identify where human judgment, machine recommendation, and automated execution intersect.

Participants will examine how agentic cyber systems can create approval fatigue, cognitive drift, and accountability gaps if roles are not clearly defined before deployment. The session will also discuss how AI-fluent cyber teams can preserve operational speed without surrendering decision ownership.

The objective is not to slow innovation. It is to ensure that automated cyber defense remains agile, assured, and accountable from enterprise to orbit.

Learning Objectives
By the end of this session, participants will be able to:

  • Recognize how agentic AI and automation can blur decision authority in cyber operations.
  • Identify operational indicators of cognitive drift, approval fatigue, and human-in-the-loop fragility.
  • Apply Agentic Role Mapping as a practical method for clarifying responsibility across human-machine cyber workflows.
  • Evaluate how automated security can support data-centric assurance without reducing accountability to a checkbox exercise.
