DAF’s journey to meet DoW CIO 2027 mandates to implement the Zero Trust Roadmap is the most complex undertaking that has occurred in the history of network operations and sustainment; it is not an evolution it is a revolution. The complexity to implement a full Zero Trust Architecture addressing all seven ZT pillars introduces complexities which cannot be fully understood until experienced. Adding to that complexity for DAF and other DoW organizations is the scale of the required implementations. This session will focus on providing the lessons learned, insights, and technical efforts that achieve program success including implementation of the network, orchestration, and visibility/analytics ZTA pillars at the scale needed for DoW. We will discuss experiences with integrations of the ZT network, orchestration and analytics pillars with the other ZT pillars, User/Identity, device, application, and data which can only be achieved through significant automation such as AI analytics for ZT operations and continuous RMF capabilities using tools like the Automated Risk Management and Operational Resilience (ARMOR). We will discuss NOC and SOC operations CONOPS and procedures changes to understand ZT behavior-based alerts and events differentiated from monitoring network traffic events (PCAP analysis) and how those changes impact training for enterprise operators. Lastly, we will discuss the effects of a ZTA on users and the need for broad evangelism and education of the ZTA as it begins to affect how users access the network and systems or perhaps are denied access based on their current assigned roles.
